I would say that the majority of young people listen to electronic/House/Dub Music, I am 18 years old and i'd count myself to this majority.
Most of my friends don't listen to instrumental music like "Red hot Chili Peppers" or stuff.. they prefer the latest remix of this new Rihanna-whatever feat. song.. It kinda annoys me, because i love to listen to all kind of music (except Metal).
It simply depends on in which mood i am at the moment.. if i want to have a nice evening with a girl, i prefer Jazz or normal Songs (for example Christina Perri or Adele)
All in all i don't think you can generalize this big part of each of our's lives, and say that this music is "right" or "wrong". Music isn't about who listens to it the most often or which kind of music is the most popular.. it is simply about feeling the rhythm, getting into a good mood by listening to it.

Music always makes advertisements more appealing. However, people tend to tune-out if they hear monotonous, hypnotic sounds (hello Home Depot) or ads where the music is intended to drown-out motor-mouth ads that have 20 seconds of legalspeak.
