Well in the first book there is a "flashback" of the day Alison went missing. Later on, aria, Hannah, Emily and Spencer get messages from someone going by the name of a. Aria meets a man in a bar and falls in love with him (after a short makeout session) later to find out it's her teacher. Emily kisses her bff Miya in the photo booth at Noel's party. Spencer steals her sister mellissas boyfriend wren only For Melissa to later spot them kissing in a barn. Hannah got a parole officer because she stole sunglasses.

Personally, I would say book 8 because that's when you find out how Alison DiLaurentis died. We as the readers still don't know the whole case, but we do find out their is an accomplice and at least one A is still out there, torturing the girls
