Ralph's daydreams inevitably involve home, in happier times when he was younger. Ralph is deeply homesick and wants more than anything to be rescued and to return home. In chapter 7: Shadows and Tall Trees the boys are making there way from castle rock towards the mountain. When they pause for a while Ralph drifts into a daydream about a cottage he once stayed in on the edge of the moor. He remembered the wild ponies which used to come to the garden wall and could visualise laying in a shed in the garden and watching snow falling. Ralph recalled having cornflakes with sugar and cream in bed and the shelf full of familiar books next to the bed.

When Ralph asked for a volunteer to go and tell Piggy and the littluns that the biguns would be delayed Simon said, and I quote... "I'll go if you like. I don't mind, honestly." Then he smiled and ran off before Ralph had a chance to reply.
The title of chapter 7 is Shadows and Tall Trees. Possible topics might be what are the shadows that the title is referring to? Why does Simon volunteer to cross the island alone through the darkness and tall trees when the others boys are afraid to do so?
