The Simpsons is is the longest running prime time cartoon show, having debuted in December 1989.However it should be noted the longest running animated series is actually Sazae-san from Japan. Your question can't really be answered due to the fact there are dozens of TV shows that were the longest running before & during 2001 that are still on the air today (as of May 2014) so anything that started before & canceled in 2001 clearly wasn't the longest running in the first place.
Four Corners began in 1961 & still airs today (as of January 2017)
Of course not. TV existed LONG before 1989. If by chance you're asking if it's one of the longest running TV shows, that depends. If you're speaking of Scripted American Prime Time TV shows, Yes 27 years is impressive, however when you look at just TV in general, No. it's not one of the longest running. There are shows that have been on years & decades longer than The Simpsons with several that are still producing episodes today.
Wild Kingdom is the longest running animal based TV show. It's original run was 1963-1988 (25 years), then it was revived in 2002 and remains on the air today (12+ years) as of 02|2014... so a total of 37 years & counting.
That would be Japan's Sazae-San, having debuted in 1969 and still continues to produce new episodes today.
The Simpsons wasn't the longest running cartoon family in 1997 nor is it today.Japan's Sazae-san was, is & will remain for a while the longest running animated TV show in history, obviously this answers the question of the longest running cartoon family as well.It debuted in 1969 and produces new episodes today-However if you mean strictly American television, the closest answer is The Flintstones although it only ran for 6 seasons. The Simpsons passed The Flintstones' run in 1995 not 1997.
