What is the history of the country panem in the Hunger Games?

There are 12 districts anad 1 capitol. Each district has a job. The capitol is located in the Rockies. District 12 is located in the Appalachie Mountains. District 4 is probably located by the water. Panem lies on the ruins of North America.

All the land was destroyed and there was a war over the little bit that was left, which was North America. The land became Panem and was split into 13 districts that were ruled by the capital. District 13 rebelled against the capital but was destroyed, or so everyone thought (you find out in mocking jay that 13 had existed the whole time). Then the capital created The Hunger Games to show their power and so other districts don't rebel.

Panem is a futuristic, post-apocolyptic country that rose out of the ashes of North America. Panem was at one point a peaceful country consisting of thirteen districts and a Capitol that ruled over them all. Eventually, however, the thirteen districts rebelled against the Capitol. This rebellion led to a terrible war. Seventy-four years ago (from the first book), the Capitol came out victorious over the districts. It had even wiped out District 13 completely. Ever since then, as a lesson to the twelve remaining districts that they are more powerful and in charge, the Capitol has held a televised competition known as the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a fight to the death between twenty-four young participants. The participants are chosen randomly each year, one boy and one girl from each district. That is the history of the country we know as Panem.
