The Baudelaire orphans go off to live with their Aunt Josephine and she is terrified of everthing, even the water. Except her house is on the edge of a cliff overlooking the water
Count Olaf disguises himself as "Captain Sham" and makes aunt Josephine write a note saying that she was leaving them in the care of "Captain Sham". And throws a footstool at the window to make it look like she had jumped out.
HOWEVER, the grammatical mistakes, oh by the way, this book is BIG on grammmatical mistakes. She is obsessed with them . So, anyway, the grammatical mistakes spell out CURDLED CAVE. But this takes the orphans a while and they have to eat peppermints, which they are EXTREMELY allergic to. They do this so they can have time to figure it all out.
They find their aunt at Curdled Cave and they have to bring her back in a boat in a hurricane. Except, since these books are NOT happy, "Captain Sham" comes out on a boat. And after a long fight, Aunt Josephine, a brat who is willing to give up the sweet little children, is pushed into the water by Captain Sham.
While the orphans argue with Mr.Poe that Captain Sham is really Count Olaf, Sunny manages to BITE off Captain Sham's fake peg leg. It comes off, but Count Olaf runs away through the gates of the harbor and gets away on a train ready to dream up another plan.
