Treebeard was introduced when the Rohirrim attacked the orcs, and Merry and Pippin escaped. They fled into Fangorn Forest but an orc followed them and tried to kill them so they climbed up a tree. That tree turned out to be the ent named Treebeard. This was all in The Two Towers.
