A Sureno is a person from Southern CA. Sureno is Spanish for Southerner. It started in the 1960's when the Mexican Mafia started to get involved in the drug trade and activities in the prisons. There was the "Northern Family" who was from Northern CA that wanted a piece of the pie but did not want to join the Mexican Mafia. As they started to go to war they separated them selves as Northern and Southern Mexicans. The word got to the street that southern and northern Mexicans were at war and Southern CA gangs quickly defended the Mexican Mafia and because the Mafia is praised by the south we quickly took to the number "13".
