A silent film was one produced before the advent of the synchronized sound track. The very first movies did not have sound tracks. You've probably seen clips of some of these black and white movies. During these movies, frames would appear that would give a clip of significant dialogue, or a short summary of the story at that point. Piano players or organists would be watching the film and improvising music to fit the mood as the story unfolded. I think the first sound films were made in the early 1930's or so. Many movie idols of the silent era could not make the transition to "talkies" because their voices were not suited to the new medium.
