I think the scat that you are talking about here is scat in Jazz music, in which case scat is when a singer improvises and tune, but instead of using proper words, they say things like bap doobeedoo...etc.

That is all right but it is also a book Scat by Carl Hiaasen. I read it and it is very interesting but it is like all his other books, they're about the environment.

What ever you do DONT search it on Google. I too wondered what scat was and so searched it on Google, my mind will NEVER recover!

Scat is a form of Jazz Music. It sounds disjointed, but is rather a complex sound and takes a great deal of talent to do it well. In scat, a singer imitates the melodic line an instrument might make in a jazz ensemble, using nonsense words which are chosen for their rhythm and vowel tone.

Scat is the practice used usually in Jazz of singing a line to nonsense syllables. The singer is really using the voice as any other melodic instrument, improvising in Jazz style. It is not really an imitation of other instruments like piano, Trumpet or sax, but a creative and free use of the voice without using words. The syllables are not meant to evoke an association with language, and they do not sound like glossolalia or invented language. They are a restricted set of sounds that if anything are more imitative of rhythmic patterns. Check any recording of Ella Fitzgerald for the best examples.
