It's an older form of tape-recorder. The tape reel is usually clipped onto the left-hand stub on the machine, the tape is threaded through a mechanism to pick up the sound, and the tape is 'collected' on the right-hand spool. Advances in technology later meant the tape was later enclosed in a case and miniaturised - giving rise to the cassette tape.
