Some good starting manga:
And then some classics
Enjoy.
The Classics.
Berserk, Monster, Pluto, Uzumaki, Bokurano, Cromartie High School, Akira, Gantz, Beck, 20th Century Boys, Ghost in the Shell, Battle Angel Alita.
If you like loads of action, try Hunter x Hunter, Soal Eater, Yu Yu Hakushou and Samurai Champloo.
Samurai Champloo is one of my faves, because it's mixed with hiphop, although the manga is based in the historical era of Japan.
Also, D. Gray Man is good. It's a pretty long series, but it's a really great manga. It has such pretty drawings and the story gets even better as you read it. There are so many background history and secrets that are revealed.
Detective Conan is by favourite manga, number 2. It's a mystery/thriller and the title says it - it's a detective story. I'm not going to tell you the story (although I'd love to), but the twists and the murder plans are incredibly well written. This is probs the key to having this manga so enjoyable.

Based on the lack of information provided, this is an extremely difficult question to answer. There are thousands of manga series and to recommend one it is helpful to know the age, gender, and interests of the person in question. Also, do they read manga often? What have they already read? Do they want to read something long; or maybe just one or two chapters? Anyways, I will do my best to recommend something.
Some series that everyone would probably enjoy are Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, and Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. These are both complex, interesting, and long-ish. I haven't met anyone who didn't like them, really. If the person in question is very young, though, these three may not be a good choice. Most people seem to like Naruto, though I don't really understand why and it's extremely long, which would try the patience of many new-comers to manga.
I also highly recommend D.Gray-man, which is a bit strange, but very enjoyable. Also, Ouran High School Host Club is a great choice for girls (some guys might like it too).
I hope this helped, somewhat.
Well, Sailor Moon was extremely popular in the 90s and 80s, i have volume one of Sailor Moon SuperS, and it was extremely good. One of my favorites is Tokyo Mew Mew. Its really good and pretty popular around middle-schoolers. Another popular manga is Kamichama Karin. its really romantic and sweet. But if you really want something good and popular, check out Beauty Pop, Skip Beat, Mamotte! Lollipop, or Pixie Pop. Oops! i just realized that you probably want the definition of a Popular Shojo Manga. a popular shojo manga is a manga that sells really well and everyone loves it. A few other popular shojo mangas are Fruits Basket, Absolute Boyfriend, and just for your interest, Shojo means Manga For Girls. Hope you take my suggestions! Enjoy!
Death Note, Paradise Kiss, Naruto, Bleach, Hot Gimmick..etc
