A sewing machine that's what.

I had a Singer Starlet that was the same basic machine as the Singer Genie. A light portable machine produced in the very early 1970's. If you do a search on Singer Genie either on Google or eBay, you should find a photo of it. The starlet was made in France and I have no idea why it had a different name.

Singer Manufacturing Company dominated the American sewing machine market from the late 1800's through the 1940's. They dominated much of the rest of the world's market also. Therefore to many people of that era any black sewing machine(which was the color they used then) is called a singer. Sort of the way any facial tissue is called a Kleenex.
