David Hicks is a young Australian man who converted from Christianity to Islam.

Hicks went to Bosnia to help defend the Muslims against invading Christians, and was well-regarded in the West for his actions.

He then went to Afghanistan to help the Taliban, who were then the government of that country. Becoming disenchanted with the Taliban, he left Afghanistan but then returned to collect his passport. At this stage, he was captured and handed over to the United States forces as an enemy combatant. After torture, he was sent to prison in Guantanamo Bay, where he was to be held for an indeterminate period without charge.

Most of the proposed charges against him were found unwarranted or unconstitutional. Given that all the Guantanamo inmates who had so far been charged with any offence were of Middle Eastern origin, the military authorities needed to charge a Caucasian inmate, in order to avoid risking claims of racism . Hicks was charged with lesser crimes, and chose to accept those charges, since not to do so would have resulted in indefinite detention without charge. Since he had already been imprisoned for the greater part of his sentence, he was allowed to return to Australia to serve out the remainder of his sentence. He was required not to speak out publicly in his own defence, nor to benefit financially from the release of his story.

It is believed that David Hicks is no longer a Muslim.
