Spike and Vicious have their final fight. Spike wins killing Vicious. But he sustains heavy injuries and as he goes to leave the building he is surrounded he knows he can't win and he's going to die soon anyway. He then points his finger at them and says "Bang" and then collapses on the ground and dies.

Here is my conclusion and thoughts to the end of the story:

I will give my opinion on the matter. I truly believe Spike lived. Here is the quote from Laughing Bull during the Jupiter Jazz session:
Kid: A star just fell from the sky. Laughing Bull: That is not an ordinary star, my son. That star is the tear of a warrior. Kid: What warrior is it? Laughing Bull: A lost soul who has finished his battles somewhere on this planet. A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm where the great spirit awaits us all.
Spike and Vicious face off at the end and we clearly see one star that disappears after the credits. This may be debatable, but I have always believed Vicious to be as much as a warrior as anyone else. Him and Spike were comrades in the very beginning and loved the same woman, Julia. I believe that Vicious clearly dies in the end while Spike's death is more ambiguous. And the one star that fades away at the end belongs to Vicious, much like Gren's star falling in Jupiter Jazz Part 2. One other minor thing I consider is as the star is scrolled on it has a slight reddish color which reminds me more of Vicious. It is hard to make out and it does kind of appear blue once the screen stops scrolling. Just another thing to consider. So that is the biggest reason I believe Spike lived.
Also I tend to look at the physical damage Spike underwent during his battle with Vicious and think that, taking into account the injuries he survived during the whole series and the movie (if it was real and took place before Real Folk Blues), he would have survived.
The beautiful thing is that it is open ended. I believe in what I believe because it gives me the most comfort and satisfaction. The first few times I watched the series I did believe Spike had died, but now I have seen it roughly 10 times and kind of know everything inside and out. As well as have years to come to the conclusion of what I believe now.

Recently as well Director Shinichiro Watanabe stated he survived the shows finale.
