What happened to the spear of destiny?

The spear of destiny was "liberated" by an American special commando force, several hours before the fall of Berlin, to keep it out of the hands of the Russians. It was transported to the USA in a small, fast, highly advanced (for the time) submarine and was stored in a secret vault somewhere in Dakota.

It vanished from there under circumstances which I have never been able to verify, somewhere during the fall of 1967. Everybody who was directly involved either died or has gone into such deep cover they might as well be. The members of the original commando force also died before the war was even over, in a series of freak accidents that are virtually impossible to arrange.

It appears that someone, or something, doesn't want people to have the spear.
