As I understand it, his contract was not renewed. He was one of the premiere local news anchors and could command a higher salary + long-term contract. Without that contract, he was free to leave KUSI-TV and seek other opportunities at other news stations, as well as retiring.

It seems that he's gone into semi-retirement since he's quite visible on the FOX5 Morning News programme a few times per month.

He's been in the news business for 30 years, I think the politics and KUSI's lack of commitment are probably to blame for his earlier-than-desired retirement.

Best of luck to him. He was (and still is) a San Diego legend!
