Herschel Grynszpan was a Polish Jew. In October 1938 the Nazis deported all Polish Jews in Germany (about 17,000 people in all) to Poland. However, the Polish government (which was antisemtic at the time) had issued a little publicized decree a few months beforehand depriving all Poles resident abroad for more than five years of Polish citizenship unless they formally registered a request to remain Poles. Herschel Grynszpan's parents had fallen foul of this decree, and along with about other Polish Jews deported from Germany, they had to spend weeks living in railway stations on the German-Polish border ... The generally accepted view is that he acted mainly out of desperation.
The main character in the book "Surviving Hitler" is Herschel Grynszpan, a Jewish teenager who assassinated a German diplomat in 1938. The book also focuses on the experiences of other Jewish individuals who survived the Holocaust.

A Polish Jew named Herschel Grynszpan. He assassinated a Nazi politician, and the Nazis used it as reason to attack the Jews - Grynszpan made the Jews look dangerous. The Nazis retaliated by initiating Kristallnacht - better known as The Night of Broken Glass, where they burned, looted, and destroyed Jewish homes, businesses, and places of worship (synagogues). Over 30,000 Jews were also arrested, and 91 were subsequently killed.
Kristallnacht was triggered by the assassination in Paris of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan, a German-born Polish Jew. In a coordinated attack on Jewish people and their property, 91 Jews were murdered and 25,000 to 30,000 were arrested and placed in concentration camps.
