It was a steep-walled bay with a grassy floor and at its inner end was a flat wall as smooth as mason's work. Though the secret door was in that wall it could neither be seen nor opened.

The land about them grew bleak and barren . There was little grass, and before long there was neither bush nor tree, and only broken and blackened stumps to speak of ones long vanished.
In two days going they rowed right up the Long Lake and passed out into the River Running, and now they could all see the Lonely Mountain towering grim and tall before them.

The town of Laketown was at the shores of the Long Lake and near the mouth of the forest river coming out of Mirkwood. The men traded with the elves and goods flowed through the town. It was built on pilings out in the water, in part to provide protection from the dragon.

The door is built near a very high ledge on one of the steeper parts of the moutain, maybe 100, 200 ft above ground. Reaching the ledge is a few hours hike form the base, but the cliff face is steep enough that a rope dropped from the far edge of the ledge would touch the ground at the base. There is grass on the ledge, and also snails.
