Yes. Kakashi does die when fighting Pain. (He uses his Mangekyo Sharingan to protect Choji and dies). But he is soon revived after Naruto talks to Nagato.
He knows who they are after talking to his father and mother. He talks to his father when he fights Pein and he talks to his mother when he tries to take control of the nine tails inside of him.

well , exactly accurate, I can not tell ,but from my opinion i can tell that i thought before Naruto will end up , but after hearing from Hinata all words , and i knew before that she loves naruto , but she couldn't tell to him , until this episode 165 , she talks to naruto how she wanted to be whit him , walk besides him . And than she says " Naruto ........ I LOVE YOU " or " I LOVE YOU ............ Naruto "
yea he does naruto kills the 6 pains and there is the last one left and he is actually nagato. naruto doesnt battle him he just talks to him and pain switchs sides with naruto and kills himself by bringing back everybody he killed in the hidden leaf village. u can watch it on naruto.com. i think its episode 175. its a really kool episode
