well at first he sees a blinding light (patronus charm) from the other side of a lake in the form of his dad's patronus, so naturally he thinks its his dad's. later on, hermione brings him back in time and when the moment comes he waits for his dad, who never arrives, so he produces the patronus and learns that he has his dad's patronus.
