In the first book Katniss' Father tells her "You can survive as long as you can find your self." He was talking about the plant but it has a deeper meaning. It is saying once Katniss found herself (The Mockingjay) she defeated the Capitol, thus in a way "surviving."

She is somewhat small. Her father died in the mining accident in District 12 that left many people fatherless or husbandless. Katniss was named after an edible plant called Katniss root. Before the Hunger Games, she liked to hunt with her best friend, Gale. Peeta Mellark is the chosen male tribute from District 12. He has blonde hair and blue eyes. He is tall and strong. His family was slightly more wealthy than Katniss'. His family is a break making family, who named him after Peeta bread. Gale is Katniss' best friend. He's eighteen. He also grew up in the Seam. He has straight black hair, olive skin and grey eyes. His father was killed in the same explosion that killed Katniss' father.
