After sparks, from the first signal fire, set a pocket of jungle on the slopes of the mountain on fire Piggy realises that he can't see the littlun with the mulberry coloured birthmark on his face. This was the same boy who had earlier spoke of seeing a snake-thing or beastie. He was never seen again and had presumably died as a result of the fire in the pocket of jungle.
