After Jack leaves to go to Castle Rock, Piggy becomes more confident with himself, and starts to stand up for himself. This happens because Jack stole Piggy's glasses, and now he can no longer hide behind his disability of not being able to see.

Piggy is portrayed as being physically handicapped in the novel "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. He wears glasses and has poor eyesight, which is a physical limitation for him on the island. This makes him vulnerable and reliant on the other boys for assistance.
I'm not certain that "handicapped" is a good description but Piggy does wear thick glasses and he is very fat (to quote from the book). He also suffers from asthma and a certain reluctance towards doing work. All of these things combine to handicap Piggy by impossing physical limitations on what he can do. Piggy's thought processes and decision are also rather rigid and he finds difficulty adapting to new ideas. He indicated this by his shout of "Nuts!" In reply to Simon's suggestion that the beast might be "Just us."

Piggy proposes to move the fire to the beach, away from the mountain, to avoid it going out and losing the chance of being rescued. He believes the fire is more useful and visible on the beach as a signal for passing ships or planes.
