Maurice is a bully but he is also a coward. Maurice hasn't got the necessary focus to commit acts of evil on his own but he is more than willing to be led. Maurice is happy to follow the lead of Roger or Jack and actively participate in whatever excesses they devise. Maurice is a 'heavy,' he is a thug who carries out the orders of others but he hasn't got the imagination to think up evil by himself. Maurice is a fox led by wolves.

Maurice was described in chapter 1: The Sound of the Shell as being next in size, of the choir boys, to Jack. In Chapter 4: Painted Faces and Long Hair he is described as being in the 'dubious' area between biguns and littluns. So he's young but big. Maurice is also a bit of a bully who, following the lead of Roger, deliberately trampled through the sand castles built by the littluns on the beach. Unlike Roger Maurice mumbled 'Sorry,' as his mind was busy preparing an excuse for what he had just done, in the unlikely event that anyone should call him to account. So Maurice is a bit of a coward as well as a bully. Later in the book he is chosen by Jack on two separate occasions to accompany him on visits to Ralph's camp. So, Jack probably found Maurice's size and willingness to bully people to be attributes that he could make use of and had appointed him as a sort of bodyguard.

In Lord of the Flies, Maurice is a rude boy that enjoys kicking over the littluns sand castles and causing destruction. He's a bully just like Roger that puts sand in the littluns eyes. He does this even though he knows it's wrong. "Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing. At the back of his mind formed the uncertain outlines of an excuse." (Golding, 60) "Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones. Maurice followed, laughing, and added to the destruction." (Golding, 60)
