This question is still argued today. Most people agree that a truly great work of art stands the test of time. Therefore, a person can not know what work done during one's lifetime will become great. There are exceptions, of course. Many people agree that Michael Jackson was a genius, his work was done for entertainment, but it also has qualities of great art. These qualities can be seen and felt in his work, and so it is great, ultimately time will tell.

How are the performing arts similar to the visual arts?

Other than the fact that they are both "arts", the performing arts and visual arts really don't have much in common. They are both considered "arts" in society because they are labeled as "displays of works of beauty". Whether you dance, sing, act, dance, draw, paint, or just plain doodle, you are performing "an art" in your own way! Hope this helps!
