Katniss is unsure about how she truly feels about Peeta (what is real and what is part of their act) which upsets Peeta. Katniss tells Peeta that "[t]he closer we get to District Twelve, the more confused I get".

He is trying to protect Katniss, so he joins with the Careers and does all he can to keep them away from her by misleading them. When they find her in the tree, Peeta is not there, so Cato tries to climb the tree to get to her, but breaks a branch in the attempt. Then, Peeta gets there and suggests that they wait until she comes down because, "she can't stay up there forever." That is all you learn in that book, but there is more about the escape to be learned in the 3rd book.
