They returned from the Chamber of Secrets with the basilisk fangs and Ron thought of the house-elves. Hermione dropped her basilisk fangs and kissed him on the mouth. Harry was awkward and told them that, "There's a war goind on here!"
They don't. Only projections of them do. This was the Horcrux's way of stopping Ron Weasley from destroying it.
