Mark Farner played with Terry Knight and The Pack, or just The Pack prior to Grand Funk Railroad. Mark started as the bass player, working himself up to guitar and vocals when Terry Knight left as the leader. Don Brewer also played in The Pack on drums. Terry Knight became GFR's producer, from ,"On Time" through "E Pluribus Funk" albums. When Knight left, the band became just, The Pack.

mark farner of Grand Funk Railroad
I don't recall a Scott Cherry ever in Grand Funk Railroad. Early on in 1969-1971, it was Mark Farner, lead vocals and lead guitar, harmonica and keyboards, Mel Schacher on bass ,Don Brewer on drums.Craig Frost was added on keyboards in late 1971or early1972."Mean Mistreater" was played by Mark himself on keyboards in 1970-1971 before Craig. Terry Knight was GFR's producer and fronted Terry Knight and The Pack. Mark Farner and Don Brewer played in The Pack before Grand Funk Railroad. Don was on Drums, and Mark started on bass, and then guitar, then lead vocals. when Terry quit.
Mr. Mark Farner, who wrote all the music on On Time, Grand Funk, Closer to Home, Survival, with the exception of cover songs ,The Animals "Inside Lookin' Out", and Dave Mason's"Feelin' Alright", and Stones "Gimme Shelter". Don Brewer coauthored a couple of songs on E Pluribus Funk with Farner.
Mark Farner became a born again Christian, playing concerts after the break up of GFR, in a Christian light and on a Christian label. Not sure of other members religious affiliation.
Grand Funk Railroad
No!- Mark performed solo for a long time after disbanding GFR after the album, Good Singin', Good Playin' , in1976. GFR was playing in the early eighties, for a short time. Also, orig. GFR played together,( Mark Farner, Mel Schacher, and Don Brewer) in the mid 90's. Mel and Don wanted Mark to keep playing, but Mark reminded them that he would play 3 years and go back to a solo mode, and he did- Legal wrangling occurred, with Mark unknowingly signing over his rights to the Grand Funk Railroad name and Capital Records support. Don and Mel formed the new Grand Funk Railroad around 1999 or 2000, with a new lead singer, lead guitarist, and keyboard player. Thus, it took 3 people to replace Mr. Mark Farner. Mark still plays solo concerts with his NRG Band. He cannot advertise as GFR, only FORMERLY OF GFR, in capital letters, in front of his name or band .
Former members; Mark Farner- guitars, lead vocals, (1968-77,1980-1983, 1996-1999) Dennis Bellinger- bass (1980-1983) Howard Eddy,Jr.- keyboards (1996-1999) Current members; Don Brewer- drums, lead vocals(1968-1977,1980-1983,1996-present) Mel Schacher- bass guitar (1968-1977,1980-1983, 1996-present) Max Carl- lead vocals (2000-present) Bruce Kulick-guitars (2000-present) Timothy "Tim" Cashion- keyboards (2000- present) Craig Frost- keyboards (1972-1977, 2005-present) Original Grand Funk Railroad formed in 1968,1969, and was a trio of Farner, Brewer, Schacher, which added Craig Frost in 1972. GFR played until 1977, then disbanded. Reformed with Dennis Bellinger in 1980,with Farner and Brewer. Original trio formed again in 1996-1999. In 2000 Farner wanted to go solo and left. Brewer and Schacher wanted to keep GFR going, and hired Carl, Kulick(Kiss), Cashion and later Frost. Farner fronts the Nr G Band and both groups continue to play GFR songs, but Farner cannot call himself Grand Funk Railroad, because Don and Mel own the rights to the name, although Mark still sits on the Board.
December of 1972- Farner quit playing Green Messenger guitar and played the Red Micro- fret guitar for this concert, although it looks a little bit like a Fender Strat at first glance.
