What has made quiz sHow is so popular over the years?

This is just some general information that i have gathered.. Get to see an everyday person become rich/ the idea that anybody can win it. The prizes. A home audience, you're always smarter. They are cheap and can be mass-produced. Gambling Can be educational Quiz shows started on the radio in the 1930s, and the reason for their popularity was because it provided listeners with a source of entertainment where they could also gain knowledge, also allowing contestants to win a prize. They have remained so popular today because there are now specialist quiz shows such as 'the weakest link', prizes are even bigger, audiences can now participate from home interactively and as well that there are now films and games surfacing around quiz shows, for example 'Quiz Show' and 'Slumdog Millionaire'. University challenge from the previous era was one of the first intellectual quiz shows, which required students to participate instead of the typical doctors, teachers, etc. This was inspirational to other students and people began to appreciate knowledge more. University challenge prize was only ever a trophy which it still is even now. This is because the BBC are an institution which don't rely on advertising and therefore don't promote products or fancy prizes like other commercial channels do. In the 50's the country was recovering from depression due to the knock on effect that the war had meaning the economy was bad and industry so low that everybody was too scared to spend the little bit of money they had. By producing these quiz shows it was giving them entertainment as well as education. By having a show where you have a chance of winning money just simple by answering questions correctly was so unique. The host would come back week after week which would encourage the audiences at home to tune in, almost like routine eventually. Escapism-Life is stressful, work is hard TV quiz shows can let you escape from all that and make you feel good about yourself. It helps you unwind after a long day of work that's why a lot of quiz shows start 5pm + (weakest link, question of sport, mastermind, university challenge) so people who have just finnished work can watch.

What is the difference between a quiz show and a game show?

In the 1950s, the big money shows were generally referred to as quiz shows. Unfortunately for the genre, the quiz show scandals occurred, which nearly destroyed the entire genre. The term "game show" is more common in the US today, and one reason is that producers did not want to connect new shows to the rigged shows of the 1950s. Further, shows using quiz questions basically disappeared until the premiere of Jeopardy! in 1964, which, owing to the scandals, provided the contestants with all the answers but made them come up with the questions.Whether "game show" or "quiz show" is used depends on the country. However, quiz shows carry the connotation of answering questions, while there are many game shows that do not involve trivia at all (for example, The Dating Game and Match Game).
