Many drawings and daily entries of Lt. John J Dunbar's thoughts and activities. He is quite an accomplished artist, using quill and feather pen (no small feat!)

I would LOVE to see a reproduction of the journal online, but I haven't found it as of yet. If you watch the movie and snap a few screenshots of the pages, you can sort of reproduce it on your own.

What's fun is to try to reproduce it using your own imagination, based on the events the film follows. Like for example:

(Before the entry of "made gifts of the coffee and sugar, as the didn't expect to last anyway") "The fierce one's first taste of sugar seemed to crack the hard surface of the warrior I know he must be within the Souix tribe". His smile was of extreme pleasure in tasting sweetness that has probably been limited in his life to raw honey".

Try it for yourself! If you love this movie as much as I, you'll find yourself in the mindset of Lt. Dunbar more often than not! Good luck.
