When the naval officer comes on shore, he sees the boys chasing Ralph. The boys are really trying to kill Ralph, but the officer thinks that they are only playing some kind of war game or something like that. He says "fun and games" in a questioning sort of way and then asks if they have been having a war.

The officer is disappointed with the boys because he does not think that they have done a very good job of keeping themselves clean and looking civilized. He says that the way they look and are acting is nor really what you would expect of English kids.

Who rescued the boys of Lord the Flies?

Jack volunteers his hunting group to watch.

Why does the officer turn away in embarrassment at the end of Lord of the Flies?

Becasue he is confronted by a group of virtually naked little boys who are sobbing noisily and have confessed that two other boys have been killed. As an officer in the British Royal Navy is is embarrassed to witness their tears both for himself and on their behalf too, as well brought up British boys should keep a stiff upper lip and should not cry. The boys are not conforming to the rules of the game.

When the naval officer looks at the boys what does he see?

Quoting from the book the naval officer's impression of the various boys seems to have been... (The hunters) A semicircle of little boys, their bodies streaked with coloured clay, sharp sticks in their hands, were standing on the beach making no noise at all. (Ralph) The officer inspected the little scarecrow in front of him. the kid needed a bath, a hair-cut, a nose wipe and a good deal of ointment. (Littluns) Other boys were appearing now, tiny tots some of them, brown, with the distended bellies of small savages. (Jack) A little boy who wore the remains of an extraordinary black cap on his red hair and who carried the remains of a pair of spectacles at his waist...
