Instead of just, "Hey, maybe we should lay off the hard drugs and stick to beer or pot," it was, "No one should ever do any kind of drug for any reason, ever again." This sentiment resonated with a lot of people, and straight edge was born. Many of them also believe that it's wrong for people to take prescription drugs. There are even certain extremists who believe that prescription medication shouldn't be taken by people with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
