Well at the end of the movie, Batman had just killed Harvey after Harvey went and turned into two face. Batman saved Gordan's son from Harvey, and told Gordon to pin it all on him to prevent Gotham going into anarchy. So, Gordan calls the command in, and everyone started chasing him. When Gordan's son asks him why he's running Gordan tells his son this:
"Because he can take it. He's the hero that Gotham deserves, but not the hero that Gotham needs right now. He's a silent guardian, a protector of the city. The dark knight."
