- While it is correct that the character of Sophia was supposed to be the oldest (she was Dorothy's mother) in actuality both Bea Arthur (Dorothy) and Betty White (Rose) were born the year before Estelle Getty (Sophia). The birth order of the actors playing the Golden Girls is: Betty White Jan. 1922, Bea Arthur May 1922, Estelle Getty July 1923, and Rue McClanahan (Blanche) Feb 1934. Ironically, the last surviving Golden Girl is Betty White, the oldest.

Rue McClanahan, who played Blanche Devereaux. She was born in 1934, and sadly died in 2010. All of the other 3 main actresses were born in the 1920s.
