There are two films with the same characters, but with a different cast:
"Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss" (1988). Made for television. Stars Jean Shepherd, James Sikking, Dorothy Lyman, Jerry O'Connell.
"It Runs in the Family" (1994). Stars Charles Grodin as 'The Old Man', Kieran Culkin as 'Ralphie', Mary Steenburgen as 'Mother', Christian Culkin as 'Randy'.
Update 2012. Unfortunately there is now an "official" sequel to "A Christmas Story". It's a direct to video film titled, "A Christmas Story 2" (2012). No one involved with the original film has anything to do with this one. Ralphie is now a teenager and wants a car for Christmas.

In The Christmas Story, Ralphie refers to the leg lamp as electric sex. His father preferred to call it his major award.
The phrase "the troops will be home for Christmas" was used in the movie Love Story when the character Jennifer was dying and means that there was hopes that the war would soon be over. This way the troops would be able to go home to their families for Christmas.

That would be the 1983 movie A Christmas Story starring Darren McGavin ans the Old Man, Melinda Dillon and Mother, and Peter Billingsley as Ralphie.
