Actually no, it is sadly very loosely based on the actual historical event.

First of all, the christians didn't slaughter the entire Muslim population of the city when they first attacked it. Due to a heat stroke they went on a rampage in the first section of the city, but later got back in line. Heck, there were even Muslims into the city during the whole conflict.

Second, it wasn't Saladin's sister who was murdered, it was a friend of theirs, even if the person was close, and Saladin was not always the kind and good ruler that he was shown in modern media. Heck, after the siege of Jerusalem, only those that could pay a huge amount of money were free to go. The rest (the poor men, women and children) were sold into slavery, and in the Middle East at that time that meant a fate worse then death.

Third, Bailen and his wife never reached France, they died due to sickness on the way.

What saddens me is that they tried to give a message across, but by doing so twisted historical events, and used the usual "in the past we were all bad, so we have to learn now" kind of ideology Hollywood uses nowadays.

I wish people would look more into it then just base their opinion of the whole even on one blockbuster movie...
