The info about the story being based on the Nelson DeMille novel is true as far as I can discover. The novel may even be vaguely based upon the Tailhook scandal, but there were *absolutely no rapes* in the Tailhook scandal. The truth of the matter is much more mundane. Paula Coughlin, the woman who blew the cover on the incident was not raped; she was manhandled as she walked down a hotel passageway filled with junior aviators. As she, too, was an aviator and felt this was highly insulting behavior, she reported it. When nothing happened, she went to the press.

I do not excuse the aviators for their brutish, idiot and lewd behavior, but report the facts as they happened. Again I say, no one was raped. Professionals were manhandled inappropriately and later attempts were made to cover up the incident, which some call the real scandal, but no woman was raped. Though I was not in the military at the time, I worked for a military command as a civilian and one of my supervisors was an aviator who attended the Tailhook convention. This whole thing was the talk of the town for a number of months.

A number of reforms were instituted because of the Tailhook scandal ("Tailhook" refers to the hook that is used in landing an aircraft on an aircraft carrier), which was a good thing in the end, but I say for the third time, there were no rapes at the 1991 Tailhook convention.
