The record company didn't even want Ringo to play at first, so that was not the reason. Best was the Beatles drummer for 2 years, and was very popular among fans in the early days at live shows in their home town of Liverpool and when they toured the Hamburg clubs in Germany. Indeed when he was fired his fans protested at Beatles gigs with sign posts that read things like "Pete is Best" and "Pete forever, Ringo never".
