Absolutely not! In my mind this is one of the most glaring departures from the book. In Book 4, Chapter 9, 'Shelob's Lair' (part 2 of 'The Two Towers' book) it is Gollum who attacks Sam from behind in the darkness of Shelob's cave that separates the two hobbits. One of the main themes of the book is undying friendship; I would say the movie does an excellent job of destroying that theme if only for a moment.

Gandalf tells Aragorn about Frodo before he sees Saruman. Aragorn knew about Gollum before hand because he had been tracking him and knew of his escape from Mirkwood and his capture in Mordor, where Frodo's identity was revealed.
Actually the One Ring did take over Frodo in the end, attracting Sauron's attention resulting in him sending a Nazgul to take the One Ring from Frodo. But before the Nazgul could arrive Gollum bit off Frodo's ring finger and fell into the "Cracks of Doom", destroying the ring, Sauron, and the Nazgul.
