I think because he feels Jack is and probably will be a better leader than him. He feels if he criticizes him, he will feel better and appear that way to everyone else. Making him look the better leader.

∙ 14y agoTo show his dominance among them. To show leadership by beating him and setting everyone in place. Jack is basically like a dictator in the book, he is never wrong and always right and anyone who disagrees gets a the boot.
