Two unidentified boy grab burning branches from the fire and run off along the beach with them. Jack remains to make his speech flanked by Robert and Maurice.

Both boys suffered some pain and manage to inflict blows on their opponents. In a direct one on one the fight ended in a draw, with both boys warily watching each other. After the death of Piggy however Jack was victorious because he had his entire tribe behind him while Ralph was alone and was forced to run away to save his life. Ultimately though Ralph triumphed. When the naval officer arrived to rescue them it was Ralph who claimed to be in charge and it was Ralph who would doubtlessly tell the naval officer everything that had occured on the island and the part which Jack played in it.
