In Lord of the Flies when the boys killed Simon did they know what they were doing?

The boys eventually do realized that it was Simon, rather than the beast in the middle of murdering him. However, swept away by their wild state, they continue to bash and beat him. If you remember, at one point, Roger pretends to be a pig and even Ralph gets carried away and wants to hurt him, turning the fun and games into something more violent. This example applies to when they were killing Simon as well;they wanted to get a chance to hurt something so vulnerable.

The boys kill Simon on the beach because they are caught up in the moment when they are performing the ritual and they think he is the beast so they beat him to death and then all run away, without really realizing that they had just killed Simon.

They murder Simon because the boys were all already hyper as they had just feasted on a big pig and they start their pig dance ritual, as they are dancing and pretending to kill a pig, Simon comes from the bushes staggering and desperate to tell the boys the Beast on the hill is really just a dead man in a parachute, as he is staggering the through the "scar" he comes out an scares all the boys and he gets tangled into the parachute, everyone except Piggy starts beating an stabbing him, he screams out in pain trying to tell them of the body on the mountain then the parachute gets a gust of wind and carries him to the rocks and out to sea.
