Yamato is introduced in part 2 series of naruto as a temporary replacement for Kakashi as team 7 leader. after Kakashi return's Yamato stays on the team in an additional leadership postion. Though "Yamato" is a codename assigned to him for the purposes of joining Team 7, he prefers it over his real name, Tenzo. Unlike Kakashi, who places his teammates before the mission, Yamato will leave them behind if they become a hindrance, citing that as ninja they should be able to look after themselves. During his infancy, Yamato was abducted by Orochimaru and experimented upon in an attempt to replicate the First Hokage's unique abilities. Orochimaru was forced to flee Konohagakure before he could complete his testing, and thus never knew that Yamato had successfully obtained the First's Mokuton techniques. When using Mokuton techniques, Yamato can form anything out of wood at will. It also allows him to suppress a tailed beast's influence over its host. This is the primary reason he is assigned to Team 7, as he can stop Naruto Uzumaki if the nine-tailed demon fox within him gets out of control.
Yamato is first added as replacement Kakashi Hatake,though has come back. Although,"Yamato" is a code name given to him for the purposes of joining Team 7,he seems to prefer it over his real name,Tenzo. Yamato was kidnapped as a child by Orochimaru and injected with the First hokage's DNA in an attempt to replicate the First's abilities. Orochimaru was forced to abandon Yamato before he could complete his research,and thus never knew that Yamato survived the experiment and was able to use the First's Mokuton techniques. With the ability,Yamato is able to combine water and earth to create wood for varying purposes,such as creating wooden copies of himself or erecting wooden barriers instantaneously. He is also able to suppress the "Nine Tailed Fox's" influence over Naruto Uzumaki,which is primary reason he is assigned to Team 7. Yamato is a member of the ANBU,and although he usually projects a calm,stoic demeanor like other ANBU,he can be quite laid back when not on duty,and is not above using his Mokuton techniques for creature comforts such as making a house to "camp-out" in.

Captain Yamato's real name is Tenzou. This was found out in episode 56.
His real name is tenzou, and he was in ANBU. He was assigned to replace kakashi while he was ill on the mission to retrieve sasuke early in shippuden.
