The island in Lord of the Flies is a microcosm because the island is supposed to be a small concentrated of society as a whole, while the boys on the island are symbolic of the population of the world as a whole. Meaning that everyone in the world has the potential for evil, whether the exercise this or not.

What is LOTF a microcosm of and why?

The novel, "Lord of the Flies" takes place on an island where English school boys are stranded after a plane crash. It is a microcosm (something small that represents a bigger population or place) the island to the world here. This is because all of the events (power, rules, leaders, destruction, behavior, election etc) is what happened on the island and it is a representation of the entire world. Hope this helps! Also, it is a GREAT book to annotate for motifs.
