The far future. At least 74 years, because at the beginning of the trilogy they are in the 74th year of the Games. Panem is set as North America, but the map of Panem is smaller than that of North America, signifying that it may have begun to go underwater.

Why is the Hunger Games science fiction what makes it science fiction?

The book, The Hunger Games, is part of the Science Fiction genre. This is a Science Fiction book because the book is set in the future and has new inventions and usage of words. The Hunger Games, is set in the future because the continent of North America has been conquered by a group of people and is now called the country of Panam. It is also set in the future because they have hovercraft's that move extreamly fast. Another reason why this book is set in the future is because people have learned how to control the weather and temperature in an outdoor environment. This also show that they have new technologies to control the weather. These are just a few of the reasons why, The Hunger Games, is set in the science fiction genre.

Why is the settinng of the Hunger Games important?

The opening scene informs the reader about Katniss, her love for Prim, her mother and of course Gale. It also lets us know about the Hunger Games - what it is and why people loath it. It's just a scene that gets you started in on the book, informing you about the characters and the Hunger Games, itself. Hope this helped.

What is the setting of The Hunger Games?

The setting of the book 'The Hunger Games' is in a post-apocalyptic North America by the name of Panem. At the beginning, Katniss, which is the main female protagonist, lives in District 12 until later she travels to the Capitol to compete in the annual Hunger Games. The Capitol is estimated to be in the Rockies, while District 12 is in Appalachia. After several days in the Capitol, they travel to the Arena where the actual Games take place. Collins never tells us where exactly the arenas are built, but some have guessed maybe Canada. The Hunger games is set in a country called Panem which was formerly the United States. This is set 100's to 1000's of years in the future. The smaller-scale setings are district 12, the Capitol, and the Arena.

What does the theme shift from in The Hunger Games?

The book is set in the future when North America is set into 12 districts. Each year the capitol picks one boy and one girl from each district to compete in The Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live tv, where only one survior comes out. Katniss's sister is picked to compete, but Katniss volunteers to take her place, therefore Katniss has to compete in the games. (In my personal opinion The Hunger Games is one of the best books I've ever read. I would definatly suggest this book.)
