Katniss realizes after killing the boy (Marvel from District 1) after he had thrown a spear through Rue after she had been caught in his net right in front of Katniss' eyes. After she had killed him with a single arrow guilt fell upon her and she realized she had just killed a boy she didn't even know the name of.

Hope that helps.

P.S. who ever wrote HK for the previous answer, that doesn't answer my question. If you want to answer a question on wiki answers, plese make it true, positive, and no colorful language. Thank you in advance.

Mixed feelings. Her life has changed in so many ways. Before the Quarter Quell in Catching Fire and the ending, Katniss and her family lived in a huge house in a special area reserved for victors and/or Capital citizens. One thing she really liked was that everyone in District 12 was now able to go to bed with full stomachs instead of empty. But she couldn't go back to her old life, like going hunting and meeting up with her friend Gale, for her privacy became pretty much a thing of the past

At first she doesn't feel anything because she is too worried about Rue and is thinking solely about her. After Rue is dead though, she starts thinking about the fact that she killed him so ruthlessly and without hesitation but dismisses it because he killed Rue. She then goes through his belongings and makes several comments about him being arrogant and stupid but she doesn't dwell much on it. Later on though, in the second book, when she is on the Victory Tour she sees his family and finds out her name and feels bad about the fact that she killed him without a thought and she didn't even know his name and she also worries about what his family must be going through and regrets killing him.

Katniss felt ashamed of the Captiol, because of having to kill other districts children, knowing that they have familes and friends.
