Thus did Bruce Wayne, the flamboyant millionaire and playboy, become Batman, the world's greatest detective.

Batman's initial onslaughts against the underworld, which began in 1939, drew the ire of police officials, who refused to condone his extralegal vigilante activities. However, after 1941, when he was made an honorary member of the Gotham Police Force. Batman was able to escalate his crime-fighting endeavors.

Note in other versions, Batman's parents are said to be killed by other characters, including the Joker (before he became the Joker).

After all, criminals are a superstitious cowardly lot, and what better way to make use of their superstitious and cowardly nature against them by dressing up as a giant bat that seem to appear out of nowhere and disappear all the same after capturing them all.

In the Nolan-verse; He became 'Batman' specifically because he was afraid of Bats. He wanted to show a symbol that could be used for good, but he in turn had fear of that symbol. So now he has overcome his fear of bats, but is also looked towards as a vigilante.

And oh, yeah, in the movie, instead of a batmobile, he has a bat tank, which is a all terrain vehicle that looks frickin' awesome in black.In the new movie, out summer of '08, the dark knight, another name for batman, takes on two face, played by eckhart, and joker, played by Heath Ledger, who presumably killled his folks. His new vehicle in this movie is the bat pod, which is the new version of the bat cycle, which is bound for success as well. He was in his study one night and a bat came through the window.

In her attempts to prove her worth, Stephanie accidently started a city-wide gangwar, and Tim returned to being Robin after trying to save one of his schoolmates.

Later, Batman died, and Dick became Batman. He fired Tim in favor of Damien Wayne, Batman's son. Later, Batman turned out not to be dead, and returned to being Batman, but he kept Damien as Robin.

In an alternate Universe, a girl named Carrie Kelley became Robin after saving Batman's life.

In the "World without Young Justice" storyline, Impulse is forced to change the universe due to time travel shenanigans, creating an alternate universe where Stephanie Brown became Robin instead of Tim when Batman stops her from killing her father.

As of the New 52, Helena Wayne, Bruce Wayne's daughter to Catwoman, was Earth 2's original Robin. As an adult, she claimed the role of Huntress and is currently stuck in the Earth 1 Universe with Powergirl, trying to find her way home.
