The answer above is false.Most people think he died in the death ball but instead he was brought back in time to the planet where they got the healing liquid. There he battled someone he thought was frieza but was actually his ancestor. Angered by the loss of his comrades and his incapability to do anything when frieza so called destroyed planet vegeta and him, he turned into a super saiyan.He then defeated the ancestor known as chilled(I don't know why all there names resemble something cold) the planet plant(race that invented the healing liquid)
told everyone about the legend of the super saiyan which is why on planet vegeta he said. "one hasn't appeared in over 1000 years" that's because it happened back in time
