In The Hunger Games : The game-makers declared in the middle of the games, that if both members of the same district, are still alive, they can both win. Then, when Katniss and Peeta were both alive, they all of a sudden said that there could only be one winner, and neither wanted to kill the other and loose each other, so Katniss brought out poison berries, and they were both going to commit suicide. But the capitol got mad, so they let them both win, though some of the people were angry about this.

In Catching Fire : Haymitch and the head game-maker take the remaining tributes out because they didn't think the president was being fair by putting them back in the games. But it tells nothing more, because that was the end of the book.

They threaten to eat the poisonous nightlock berries. By doing this, both Katniss and Peeta will die and there won't be a true winner. Claudius Templesmith comes on with an announcement that stops them, though, and announces them both victors.

Starting at the beginning of the Hunger Games, Katniss stays hidden in the trees and Peeta tries to hang with the Careers, the tributes from the wealthy districts. Towards the end of the Games there is an announcement allowing two tributes from the same district to partner up and both would win the games if they made it to the end. When there was only Peeta and Katniss left, they repealed this rule. Not wanting to kill one another, they came up with a plan. The both stuck nightlock, a poisonous berry, in their mouth. Scared there would not be a victor, the Capital, allowed them to both be victors.

When Katniss was on the edge of dying of starvation Peeta feed her bread and took all the beating for her. When Peeta was dying in the Hunger Games Katniss nursed him back to being well and when the mutations nearly ripped his leg off katniss stopped him dying of blood loss. When Katniss was unconcious and lying in 'a very scary pool of blood' Peeta nursed her back to health. They can't live without each other, that's why it's sweet.

Katniss and Peeta both winners of the Hunger Games because the new rule that there could be two victors if they were from the same District was revoked. Katniss and Peeta decide to kill themselves by eating poisonous berries at the exact same moment. However, the Games must have a victor, so they, albeit unhappily, allow them both to live.

Katniss's hunting skills with her bow and arrow and survival instincts as well as Peeta's seemingly "impressionable" nature and his advanced camouflage skills are what keep them alive. The love aspect of the book and the fact that the capital is all about brutality, adds the twist of allowing two people to win the games as long as they're from the same district. This reunites Peeta and Katniss, allowing Peeta to survive as he is nursed to health by Katniss. In the end the capital tries to make Katniss and Peeta fight for the one spot, going back on their word, to show how cruel they really are especially with their romance. Katniss, however, gives Peeta a poison berry and keeps one for herself, threatening a double suicide if they must fight. The games are then stopped because there would be no winner and thus, both are allowed to live.

The capital is not pleased and takes the act as a hidden form of resistance and later propels the series forward with the formation of a rebellion.

Well, there are several factors in the first book that you could be referring to.

1. Throwing her the bread when Peeta's mother yelled at him and claimed no one wanted to buy burnt bread. That is why Katniss said she could not shake the connection between herself and the boy witht he bread (Peeta).

Then, there are the different ways he saved her life in the arena, these are the few I can recall off the top of my head.

1. When he teamed up with the Career Tributes (Cato and Clove from District 2 and Glimmer and Marvel from District 1), he saved her life. When Cato attempted to climb up into the tree to kill Katniss and when Cato shot arrows at Katniss, Peeta persuaded him and the other Careers to wait her out until she comes down. Then, he did not sleep that night to make sure that Katniss was alright when they waited for her under the tree.
